Who would be a great Labor Support (Doula) person?

By definition a DOULA is a non-medical assistant  (usually a lay-woman who has attended many births) who supports a laboring woman and then provides support to the mother/infant/family directly after childbirth. I offer more then that........

What could be better then having an experienced L&D Registered Nurse that still works in the field, who is also a Childbirth Educator, at your bedside, dedicated to your needs, being YOUR "DOULA" during your labor & delivery? My Labor Support care is there from BEFORE you give birth and continues even AFTER you go home. From the first contraction to the last push....I am at your side- offering guidance through experience- from massage to labor positions, to medication questions and epidural concerns, from episiotomies to sitz baths... you name it.  I will be there for you throughout your birth experience- and can explain things as they happen.

Why should you participate in a Childbirth Education class ?

To answer your and your partners questions as well as provide insight to the labor and birth process that you can't get from reading a book or watching a baby/birthing channel. Classes provide clarification of misconceptions and 'old-wives tales' by teaching you about the labor and birth process which can help reduce or alleviate fear. You will learn to recognise when you are in true labor AND when to go to the hospital. You will know what to do if your water breaks. You will know when you can get an epidural. You will know your options for labor and be able to make choices for yourself. The list of things you will learn is almost endless !!!

These are ways NOT to approach labor and birth:

"Wing it"      "Rolling with the punches"     "Go with the flow"

"Play it by ear"           "Let the doctor do what he does best"

"See what happens"           "Fly by the seat of my pants"

These kinds of approaches will only get you in trouble !!! This is the birth of your precious child ......and it is not something you can ask to do over if it does not go the way you like.

So learn your options...... and let me explain them to you.

When should you take a Childbirth Class ?

I recommend taking this class when you are about 32-34 weeks pregnant. This way you are sure to finish the series if you choose to take the NEW MOM 2 class session and it also allows you time to practice what you have learned in class for it to be effective for labor and delivery- especially if you plan on trying to have a natural unmedicated birth. You will also have time to discuss any areas of concern with your doctor.
