An Option that Works

For decades, women had two options: work outside the home or be a stay-at-home mom. Today a third, and perhaps better, option exists for creating a fulfilling and financially secure life for their families. More than 10 million women in the U.S. are taking control of their lives and creating balance between work and family by starting their own home-based businesses.

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY

The impact a woman’s income has on her family is significant. In 55 percent of U.S. households, women bring in more than one-half of the income. In many families, the earnings women contribute to the family budget are not optional, they’re critical.

While money matters, it’s not everything. Work provides interaction with other adults and provides a sense of accomplishment. A career, for both men and women, allows personal development and fulfillment. Working offers an outlet for creativity, a sense of purpose, and yes, money.

The burning question many mothers have to face today is: “Do I stay at home and take care of my family, or do I take care of my family by building a career?”

When it comes to family care, women are more likely to put their careers on hold or even end them when the need for child care arises. Perhaps that is part of the reason that, while women today are better educated than ever before, they still earn 25 percent less than men. In a recent study at CornellUniversity, sociologists found that women with children have a more difficult time getting hired than men or women without children. The study also showed a gap in starting salaries for women with children at an average of $11,000 lower than men or women without children.

Time constraints are compounded by the fact that women are still largely responsible for maintaining our households. Even with changes of attitude regarding “division of labor” at home, women still handle more than 75% of household chores, from grocery shopping and cooking to laundry and cleaning.

Time and money are two obstacles women are overcoming by creating new and better career options. Rather than settling for the inadequacies that traditional employment offers, women are changing the way they work and are creating a life that suits them.

DEMANDING MORE

Today’s women, in record numbers, are starting their own businesses. In doing so they are creating the ability to balance their personal and work lives and are finding financial security.

So why do home-based businesses work so well for women? They work because they provide options that create balance between nurturing their families and building personally fulfilling and financially rewarding careers. When it comes to home-based businesses, the direct selling industry offers some of the best options for women entrepreneurs. Today, more than 55 million people worldwide are part of the direct selling industry and four out of five of them are women.

Direct selling, also known at network marketing, is a growing, powerful industry that created $100 billion worth of business worldwide in 2005. In the U.S. alone the industry generated $30 billion in sales. With everything from cosmetics and health products to kitchen and home accessories, the industry provides a convenient way for the millions of people who purchase the products and services to shop from home.
