Crushed Candy Cane Ornaments

One of my favorite and easy holiday crafts to do with kids are crushed candy cane ornaments.  I love these becuase they turn out looking like masterpieces even when made by the youngest children.  Here's what you need:

-crushed candy canes (or mints) - be creative - red/white is festive, but other colors of candy canes are welcome!

-metal holiday cookie cutters

-baking pan

-cooking spray

Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees.

Crushing the candy canes is half the fun, so put them in a plastic bag, place between a towel on a solid surface and assist children in crushing with a hammer or meat tenderizer.  Crush the candy until it is about the size of a nickel.

Lightly spray the pan and the inside of the cookie cutters with cooking spray and place the cookie cutters on the pan.

Allow children to place the candy pieces inside each cookie cutter until the pan surface is no longer visable.

Place in the over for no longer than ten minutes - just until candy is melted together and soft.

Remove from the oven and let harden for just a few minutes. Remove the cookie cutters while the candy is still warm.

Before the candy is cool and while it is still soft, use a toothpick to poke a hole in the top for hanging.

When the ornaments begin to harden and cool, remove from the baking pan and place on a cooling rack.

Get creative!!  Make letters and other shapes - they will still look festive with holiday colors! Enjoy!!
