Teaching Money Smarts through Stories

A book series designed to teach kids to think beyond just spending

by Rebecca Klein

With some creative ideas and hard work, best buds — Isaiah, Sandy, Dennis and Stephanie — quickly turn what starts out as a $100 donation into $1000 for a food bank.

The starring elementary school-aged characters in the Millionaire Kid$ Club book series don’t have superhero magical powers. In Putting the “Do” in Donate, Dennis is given $100 by an adult and challenged to “do something good.” You’ll have to read the story to find out how he and his friends make the money grow so they can help more people.

In each installment of the series, geared for ages 5 to 12, the four pals discover how their money choices can have a major impact on their lives and the lives of others. In the first book, Garage Sale Riches, the characters learn how they have options to save, spend, donate or invest their earnings.

Co-authors Susan Beacham and Lynnette Khalfani-Cox share a rich financial background. Beacham spent nearly 20 years in financial services managing her clients’ money before shifting her focus to financial literacy for kids. She is the creator of the Money Savvy Pig, a bank with separate slots for saving, spending, donating and investing, as well as a host of other educational products. New York Times bestselling financial author Khalfani-Cox, known as “The Money Coach,” frequently appears on national television and radio shows to talk about money management.

The members of the Millionaire Kid$ Club will soon embark on three more adventures.   Home Sweet Home, which explores the topic of foreclosure from a child’s perspective, comes out this fall. Penny Power and Fun in the Future are expected to be available in early 2009.
