MomSpit: A Cleansing Product Named After the Original!

It’s far from your typical request from mom.

Eat Doritos and Hershey Kisses. Make sure you get crumbs and smudges on your face. The more the better.

That’s what Kim Dixon invited her 8-year-old, 12-year-old, and their friends to do in the name of science.

She wanted to put a product called “MomSpit” to the test. We’re not talking about the good old spit on the fingers and wipe away the gook method.

“It’s like soap and water, but without the sink,” describes Dixon of the no-rinse, alcohol-free cleanser that she and fellow mom Lucie Hunter created for anytime there’s not a sink around. “There’s emulsifying agents in there to make it foam, cleansing agents and a little moisturizer to make it soft, and water,” Dixon explains, adding that it’s designed to be gentle on the skin and remove dirt at the same time.

MomSpit (msrp: $9 for 2oz, $18 for 7oz) comes in Fig & Green Tea, Lemon & White Tea, or unscented. The smaller bottle contains more than 120 pumps of the mousse-like liquid; a half pump often does the job. The product is designed for toddlers and up.

Dixon believes the manufactured, saliva-free version produces better and faster results than the real deal and seems to be preferred by kids.

MomSpit not only passed the test with my 18-month-old and 3-year-old for tomato sauce, blueberry, and chocolate ice-cream staches; it also yielded far less squirming than the au naturale alternative.

The product evolved after a girls’ weekend poolside conversation in late 2005 between Dixon and Hunter, who first met in 1990 in their pre-marriage, pre-baby days while working in at a graphic software company. Dixon shared her desire to start a business and talked about her passion for lotion, potion, or exotic soap. Dixon says Hunter told her “I’ll come clean with you” and shared her MomSpit brainstorm.

Dixon, who lives in Ottowa, Canada, and Hunter, who calls Minneapolis home, launched MomSpit in May of 2007, communicating a dozen times a day by phone, email, IM, and text messages along the way.

“This wouldn’t have been possible years ago,” says Dixon of such feats as finding a lab using a wireless laptop from home.   “We can find anything at any time of the day anywhere in the world,” she shares. “ The technology available today has allowed us to realize our dream.”
